On April 23, 2025, the spirit of collective strength and determination was truly alive in Chandragiri Municipality, where WAWCAS women from both Chandragiri and Kritipur came together for a powerful gathering. More than 500 women participated from 32 WAWCAS groups. The event marked a significant milestone—the beginning of discussions on forming a Local Non-Governmental Organization (LNGO) in Kathmandu. More than just a meeting, it was a celebration of unity, leadership, and purpose.
A Day of Celebration, Reflection, and Vision
The event opened with the national anthem, echoing through the hall with pride and purpose. Mahesh Basnet extended a warm and heartfelt welcome, setting a tone of togetherness. The lively and joyful announcements by Master of Ceremony Keshav Adhikari kept the energy high and the hearts engaged.
Chairperson of Slisha, Mr. Raju Baniya, chaired over the event, which was graced by the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, ward chairpersons, and health personnel. A special health desk was set up to support attendees, reflecting the program’s commitment to holistic well-being.

A particularly touching moment came when WAWCAS member Urmila Prasai sang a beautiful song about WAWCAS and the power of forming an LNGO. Her voice carried the hopes, dreams, and strength of every woman in the room.

She reminded everyone that WAWCAS groups are not just gatherings—they are sources of strength, resilience, and transformation. “Each woman here has the power to create change—not just within her home, but far beyond,” she said. She described the LNGO as a platform where personal challenges become collective wisdom, where commitment and mutual support create magic.

The heart of the event was the group session. 27 groups, each facilitated by dedicated volunteers and Local Program Leaders (LPLs), engaged deeply in discussions and planning. They:

Creating a Strong and Inclusive Structure
Sirish Shrestha explained the proposed structure of the LNGO and emphasized the importance of representation from every WAWCAS group to ensure inclusivity and ownership.
Senior Local Program Leaders Alija, Binita, and Sarika provided valuable insights by clearly outlining the roles of each group. This clarification will enhance understanding and collaboration in an inclusive and respectful way of communication.
Local Leaders Offer Support and Encouragement
Mayor Mr. Ghanshyam Giri delivered an inspiring message, promising full support to the LNGO initiative and sharing insights into the types of training and opportunities available.
Deputy Mayor Ms. Basanti Shrestha congratulated the women and made a significant announcement—she invited all women to approach the Judicial Committee, which she leads, without hesitation if they face violence or problems. For many, this was eye-opening and empowering news.

As the program concluded, Chairperson Raju Baniya expressed deep gratitude and at the powerful participation and engagement of the women. “This is not just an event—this is a movement,” he said.
