SLISHA is a non-government, non-profit organization established in 1999 with a group of professionals dedicated towards making a better life for women and children of Nepal. SLISHA’s vision is to create “A happy society where children, women and men enjoy equitable rights”. SLISHA’s mission is “Creating an enabling and empowerment environment for disadvantaged women and children.”
Nepal was in a state of civil war from 10 years starting from 1996 to 2006. During the 10 years, reported deaths were over 17000 with over 3000 cases of disappearance. Post war, due to government’s insensitive approach for resettlement plan, families of the victims and affected people continued to face severe and adverse situation. Many of the children were left with no education and families without any income. This resulted in migration from their villages to Kathmandu in search of better opportunities.
SLISHA, for the children how had lost their parents during the conflict and from the families who could not afford, started SLISHA CHILDREN HOME in 2007. In the home, 20 children from the families affected by the conflict were given the opportunity for better education and a safer environment for their development.
SLISHA in coordination with Kam 4 Sud has also been implementing School Sponsorship Program for the children since 2001.
In Kathmandu, many of the migrant families had settled in Kapan. However, they had no source of income to sustain themselves. SLISHA, in attempt to bring them out of this dire situation, implemented Women at Work Children at School (WAWCAS) in 2008 which later expanded to Lamjung, Tanahu and Lalitpur. Till now, more than 4500 women have been in the program.
SLISHA has also conducted various other programs in other parts of the country. From 1999 till 2003, Discussion with Family Members (DWFM) was implemented in Lamjung, Gender Research conducted in Rauthat in 1999 and Positive Deviance in Gender and Grassroot approach (funded by UNICEF) in Parsa from 2000 to 2002.
